As pioneers pushed westward in the 19th century, Kansas City and St. Louis became important transportation centers for those bound towards the west coast. A businessman named William Tipton Seely, who served in the war of 1812, was given numerous grants of land in the middle of Missouri as a reward for his service.
He came to the area in the 1830s, making his home and establishing a general store that was stocked with food, tools, farm equipment and other supplies needed by pioneer families.

As the store proved profitable, he purchased additional grants in the area, expanding his land holdings. At the time, he called his growing settlement Round Hill. But due to the major role he played in the development of the area, it was later renamed to Tipton in his honor.
Tipton is host to a comfortable climate in which the average temperature is 55 degrees. Average high temperatures reach 89 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and average low temperatures get down to 18 degrees in January. Average annual rainfall is 37 inches with an average of 20 inches of snow each year.
